Kurugodu Rock Art

1⃣ Location : - Kurugodu village. Kurugodu taluka. Ballari district. Karnataka state. Pin code no  583116.
The latitude and longitude ( 15 '19 'N and 76' 51' E ). 
2⃣ Approach  : - It is located  32 kilometers towards North West side direction from the district head quarters Ballari. Kurugodu Which is now a taluka /divisional head quarters in the Ballari district. nearest Railway Station from the Ballari .
3⃣ Topography : -  this village situated surround by hills. in this village more than 38 Rock shelters / boulders with painting and bruisings. some important rock shelters as follows names ParivalaThattu, Jinge Bande or Jinke Gudda, Sangameswara Gudda, Bhirakal Gudda, or (Diamond Hill), Koli Gudda , Vajrayyana Gudda, Panchamukha Veerabhadraswami Gudda, temple opposite (near eduru basavanna right side A fallen boulder) Jevu Koll area, Varuthi Kolla area, Balekolla area, Budhikoll area, Rakshasi pade etc.
4⃣ Subject : -  the Kurugodu is one of the largest Archaeological site in South india,it is covered with granite hill series. There are many settlement on the surface of the many hills. Kurugodu Rock Art style and subject matter of the paintings the paintings found in the rock shelters of Kurugodu can be classified into three periods. Neolithic or earlier, Iron Age (Megalithic) and historical period. The paintings containing Human,Animals,and hunting figure found in the rock shelters and bruisings of Kurugodu. this rock paintings and bruisings similar to Mallapura, Maski, Piklihal, Sanganakallu (all sites KA) and Devaragattu or Gattumallayya, Chinthakunta, Kethavaram, Budagavi, Kandanathi all site in Andrapradesh.
Some important rock shelters a brief description of each painted rock shelters and boulders I observed at Kurugodu is given below. 1.ParivalaThattu : - In this site situated towards Northen part of the village. at the distance of the 1.5.kilometers.it is locally known as Parivala Thattu. the rock shelters noticed at Kurugodu at about 15 meters high, facing north side.the paintings in this rock Sheltera are fairly well preserved and appealingly and thematically stand distinct from the those of other rock shelters.the paintings are executed in red or orange colour of different shades. Both anthropomorphic and animal figures are represented and maximum number of human figures in different styles are executed either singular or in group.Animal figures An important animal painting depicts a tiger hunting a small deer.2. Jinge Bande or jinke Gudda : - The rock shelters and contains beautiful paintings it is locally known as Jinge Bande (rock of deer)  located on the extreme western side of the village. Mushatagati road right side hill at the distance of the 1.5 kilometers.this rock Shelter is canopied or has an overhanging of about 20 meter high and is at the top center of the hillock and faces east overlooking the Valley and the field below. the paintings are executed on the flat wall of the rock in the red colour and they include tiger, deer, and human figures, etc.
3.Rakshasi Pade : - this rock boulder locally known as Rakshasi Pade located about 4 km to the west of Kurugodu village on the Kurugodu - Kampli road. Shakarappana gadde (filled)  near Subbarao query opposite side. On a rock boulder facing South - West approximately 2 meters high on its well smoothened back Surface has a paintings executed in dark red colour. the paintings included two anthropomorphic figures of different height with a set of three split pointed bamboo like object to the west side of the human figures. 4.Panchamukha Veerabhadraswamy Gudda : - Afallen Boulder of about 5 to 6 meter high and facing north is found about 70 meters to the south of Panchamukha Veerabhadraswamy temple.the paintings visible include human and animals like humped bulls, deer etc. A double deer in flat wash is represented at the central part of the whole paintings executed to the west of humped bull. the deer turn and face each other and they have elegant body thin legs and tails completely filled with red wash.
Ballari district is a very rich in terms of the Archaeological sites more research in needed there is lots of potential to develop heritage tourism.
